Show " WE MISS HIM i Under the above heading in the last issue of Collier's Weekly contains the following kind words ? for Senator George Sutherland, of Utah, who is without doubt recognized as one of the most able j men in the United States Senate : j "Senator George Sutherland, of Utah, was de- j feated at the recent election and will not be a mem- ber of the Senate after the 4th of March. His ab- J sence will be a loss. Progressives and radicals gene- rally, and people unfamiliar with the Senate, were j accustomed to think of him as a standpat Republican. Republi-can. That designation did him an injustice. He was always courageous and very able. In looking at new measures he was never unfriendly, but merely discriminating. dis-criminating. A slight line upon him is furnished by an incident which occurred in the Senate during one of the closing days of the year. Unanimous consent was asked to set Friday, January 5, as the date for a vote on the bill prohibiting the manufacture manufac-ture and sale of liquor in the District of Columbia. Thereupon this colloquy: Mr. President, very reluctantly I shall have to object to the proposition as now made, although al-though I am quite willing to agree to any other date for a vote. On the 5th and 6th of January, however, I shall be obliged to be out of the city on important public matters. I am extremely anxious to be here when a vote is taken. I should have no objection to having a vote on the 14th of January or any other date except the 5th or 6th. Mr. James Make it the 8th of January. ' Mr. Reed Mr. President, if it will relieve the situation, I will agree to make a special pair with the senator from Utah, and make the pair non-transferable. Mr. Sutherland I prefer not to do that. The senator from Missouri and I will vote the same way on one aspect of the proposition and perhaps against one another on another aspect of it. I intend to vote for the referendum, as I have already voted for it, and then, whether the referendum carries or not, I intend to vote in favor of the bill itself on the final vote. |
