Show Hermies take lead in recreation league After a frantic first week and a half in the Cedar Recreation League, Hermies climbed into first place. This league under the auspices of the Cedar Recreation Department, involves 8 teams and 120 boys and girls. As of yet, no Cedar City Little Leagues have girls on teams, but the Cedar Recreation League has six playing. Hermies had a relatively easy time defeating Antones and Save-more Arco, but they squeaked by Gary's Texaco by one slim run in the bottom of the sixth with two men out. In that game, Kirk Higbee battled Kevin Leishman for the victory. Both pitchers pitched a good game, but the Texaco errors put them on the short end of an 11-10 score. In other action, Cedar Builders edged Lunt Motor 6-5 with James Gubler coming off the bench to score the winning run. Jon Stokes recorded the victory over eight year old Jeff Heap. In that loss, Heap picked up 14 strikeouts. He is an example of what developing control rather than speed can do for these younger boys. ' Lockhart, on a two-game winning streak, and Savemore Arco, smarting from an earlier loss to Hermies, squared off for the game of the week. At the end of the six regulation innings, the score was tied at 3 all. In the extra frame Savemore's Eric Bonzo, who went 3 for 4 at the plate, singled. Teammate Mark Esplin moved him to second with a sacrifice, and then Mike Houston knocked Bonzo in from second with a clean double. Cedar Recreation League games are held Tuesday through Friday with a game each night at the South and the East Elementaries at 6 p.m. LEAGUE STANDINGS: Hermies 3-0 Lockhart 3-1 Cedar Builders 2-1 Lunt Motor 2-1 Savemore Arco 2-1 Northeast 1-2 Antones 0-3 Gary's Texaco 0-3 |
