This is a definite point identified in a 1776 entry in Father Escalante's journal. It is located approximately 10 miles northeast of Lund in Beaver County. Boy Scouts to participate in marking Historic Trail hardy Mormon pioneers by 71 years. Hitchcock added that this will provide an excellent opportunity for the Scouts to become involved ' in a significant historic event as 1 well as provide a source of labor to get the job done. The trail will be used in 1976 as part of the American Bicentennial Bicen-tennial Commemoration and will continue to be used as a hiking trail for Boy Scouts and other ; interested groups in future years. Scouting enthusiast Dr. Morris Shirts, said he is currently working with the Utah National Parks Council to design a hiking patch which will ho awarded to Scouts who participate par-ticipate in marking the trail and also for those who hike it in future years. It w ill be similar to the Rainbow Canyon hiking patch in that it will lx in three segments, identified with each segment of the trail. Local Boy Scouts from Southwestern South-western Utah will mark the historic Dominguez-Escalante Trail where it crosses national resource lands in Iron and Washington Counties. This wif be a cooperative effort betweer the Boy Scouts and the Bureau of Land Management according to District Manager Morgan S. Jensen. The BLM has located the route on the ground and will provide the markers and . other materials. The Boy Scouts w ill place the markers, construct and place fence stiles along the route. Jensen sad that this project would culminate several years of research conducted by BLM and others. Paul Hitchcock, area Boy Scout Executive, said that two dates are scheduled for marking the three segments of the trail. On November 8 the Brian Head District will mark the "Casting of Lots" segment from Thermo Hot Springs northwest of Lund to Horse Hollow. Also, on that same date, the Cedar Breaks District will mark the Black Ridge segment from Ash Creek Reservoir to Toquerville. Then on November 22nd the Zion Park and Snows Canyon Districts will mark the Sand Mountain segment south of Hurricane to the Arizone line. The trail was established by a party of Spaniards in 1776. the same year the United States declared its independence. They were seeking a new route from Santa Fe to Monterey. California, which would escape the deep chasms of the Colorado River. The party was headed by two Franciscan Priests. Anastasio Dominguez and Silvestre Velaz de Escalante. This was the first group of white men of record to enter what is now Utah. They preceeded the |
