For Coach Tom Kingsford and his staff it was a big victory -played before a large homecoming crowd - and the first in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference this year. The win brought the T-Bird overall record to three wins against four losses. The T-Birds dominated the statistics as well as the score, but the game was a poorly played battle from the outset. In addition ad-dition to a total of 28 penalties for a total of 330 yards, there were four pass interceptions, two for each club, and four fumbles lost -- three by the T-Birds and one by the visiting Mavericks. The punting game was further evidence of the quality of the game as the T-Birds had three punts averaging only 19 yards per punt and Mesa also had three averaging 25.6 yards. Mesa struck first in the contest taking advantage of a blocked SUSC punt following the opening series of play. They took over on the SUSC 12 and marched, in five BIG SUSC GAINER. Terry Allen booted the extra point to give the T-Birds T-Birds a 7-6 lead. Later in the period Craig Snyder, kicking specialist for the Mavericks booted a 30 yard fieldgoal to put the Mavericks back in front but before the end of the period a Dyer to Dave Middleton pass connected for 34 yards and another T-Bird score. The TD gave SUSC a 13-9 lead. Neither team scored in the second period and in the third quarter Allen booted a 28 yard fieldgoal to boost the SUSC lead.
