Students belong to either the senate or the house of representatives and are organized in much the same way the U. S. Congress in Washington D. C. The congressional and senate committees have drafted bills that pertain to problems facing the nation today. They present these bills in the officially prescribed manner and debate them according to the same procedures used in regular congressional sessions. In preparation for the governmental activity, students had an in-depth study of the U.S. Constitution aijd studied parliamentary procedure. They studied methods of debating and learned the details of writing a legislative bill. The culminating activity has included bills concerning international in-ternational wheat trade, the fuel crisis, problems of pollution, use of nuclear reactors to supply electricity, and trade and foreign aid policies. Students have reviewed the literature dealing with their bills and have contacted experts in the Southern Utah area for their views and advice as they have generated their materials for their bills. Students have learned in a first-hand situation the workings of the government and have become very much aware of problems facing the nation and the complexity of involvement in finding suitable solutions. |
