These deer are among those along the Parowan Front that will be helped by the cooperative effort of the BLM, DWR and elementary students from Cedar City and Parowan in a seeding program. Deer habitat to be improved A cooperative effort by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR), and local elementary schools will improve deer habitat along the Parowan Front. On Tuesday, March 25 5,000 bitterbrush and 2,500 fourwing saltbush seedlings will be planted on deer winter range. According to Clemont B. Adams, South Elementary Principal, the planting will be done by more than 300 elementary students from Cedar City and Parowan. Supervision will be provided by personnel from BLM and DWR. Construction of Interstate Highway 15 and its deer-proof fence reduced the winter range available to deer along the Parowan Front. BLM and DWR have been improving the remaining winter range to provide adequate forage for this deer herd. Areas from which juniper trees have been cleared by chaining are visible along Interstate 15. Once the competition from trees has been eliminated, desirable browse plants can be established. BLM Area Manager, Joseph M. Jarvis, said the March 25 planting is just one part of the total effort to maintain main-tain and improve this deer habitat. Similar plantings have been made each year since 1972. |
