Show SUSC Nine go for Five on road trip this week By Jim Bayiy Five games are on tap for the Southern Utah State baseball team this week as they make stops in Las Vegas, Nev.; Costa Mesa, Calif.; and Irvine, Calif. UNLV, Southern California College of U. of California-Irvine will be the opponents. SUSC opened its 1975 season last week against University of Nevada-Las Vegas and lost 1-0. The T-Birds out hit the Rebels, eight to six; but UNLV's Dennis Deck scattered those hits for the Rebels' win. Mike Tamllos, Dave Sargent and Ed Kristensen all collected two hits against UNLV. Coach Cleo Petty will throw-two throw-two righthanders against UNLV. Randy Rose and Don Kolstad both will be making their first is the defending NCAA Division II champions. They stand with a record of 3-11. The Anteaters have had problems with their pitching and infield. They have a team ERA of 6.59 and are averaging four errors a game. Ail-American first baseman Ron Spence has been out injured but should be able to go against ihe T-Birds. SUSC will throw righthander Jeff Carter and lefthander Gary Ashton. Carter will be making his first start of the season while Ashton is 0-1. He started last Saturday against Grand Canyon, losing, 8-4. Ashton was wild, walking seven in six and one third innings. 'He allowed just four hits and struck out seven. Six of the runs were earned. The T-Birds were 0-5 on their swing to Las Vegas and Phoenix last week, losing 1-0 to UNLV, 8-5 to Northwest Missouri and 8-1, 8-4 8-4 and 5-0 to Grand Canyon. Freshman first baseman Bob Piatt leads the T-Birds in hitting after five games with a .538 average. Kristensen is hitting .471 while Sargent is at .400. Outfielder Wayne Butler hit SUSC's only homerun in Phoenix. starts of the 1975 season. Southern Cal College comes into the game with a 2-10 record.
