Show ROLLO Glyphicss n Last week I took exception at the tournament of champions, the mythical state championship, cham-pionship, being sponsored this weekend by the Utah High School Activities Association. My objections to this proposed exploitation of our high school students for the almighty dollar were further substantiated this week when it was learned that the Dixie High School Marching Group had been invited to attend the event to perform halftime activities. I'm not questioning the ability of the Dixie High School group but simply point out that none of the marching groups to perform at this UHSAA sponsored event are from the participating schools involved in the tournament tour-nament competition. What this means, to me, is that the UHSAA is insuring that still other schools, other students, other parents, are involved in A recent meeting was held in Cedar City, and other communities com-munities in Utah, to hear a proposal by the Bureau of Land Management to reorganize by consolidating its eight Utah districts into four. That proposal has met with considerable resistance despite the fact that Cedar City would be one of the four district headquarters. It was interesting to note in a release from Utah Senator Jake Garn that the proposal is also meeting with at least some resistance in Washington. I feel that some of Senator Garn's comments concerning the proposal are pertinent. The Senator indicated that he was concerned and has asked the BLM to "prove to me and to the people of Utah that tK-reorganization tK-reorganization plan would be this expensive undertaking to help insure that the event is a financial success. Now not only is Cedar High School involved in the disruption of regular school activities, but other non-participating schools as well. It further substantiates my objections to the entire event. As I mentioned last week, it is now too late to change this year's two-day two-day tournament at the Special Events Center on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City, but hopefully we can put an end to such exploitation in future years. The Iron County School Board went on record Monday of this week objecting to the tournament tour-nament and recommending, despite the outcome of this year's mythical title, that the event not be continued in the future. A state championship in our own classification is enourh. The basketball season is long ii'-i'ifli Let's not have this type ol c ploitation continue. convenient to the people the BLM is supposed to serve, would save the taxpayers money, and would not have an adverse economic impact on the cities and areas being served." He went on to state, and this is the point for which I ' concur wholeheartedly, "that the burden of proof to show that a reorganization is necessary, rests with the BLM. It is not up to the people of Utah to prove the reorganization is not necessary." The situation as I have noted before, smacks on a fundamental point involving many departments depart-ments of government including proposed designations of wilderness areas for our national parks and the elimination of in-park in-park concessions in national parks such as proposed and in the process of implementation at Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon. Let the burden of responsibility, respon-sibility, or justification, be with II. - " departments and not visa versa. |
