Show ' 1 Editorial- Ws Your move, now We' ve become just a little tired of the small schools in the south, ern Utah area trying to maneuver the larger schools-Ceda schools-Ceda r and Dixie--to meet their needs. Foir three years Cedar and Dixie High Schools have been working to develop a program in the 3A classificiation of the state that they could cope with and attach themselves to for a via'ole future development of athletics and other extra cumcular activities such as music, drama, debate, etc. Wot the first time this year, Cedar and Dixie will be a part of Region Six and will be involved in full fledged program of activity. Now the word is out that there are some in the area that would like to dissolve that and break Cedar and Dixie into two competitive organizations so that they could compete with schools in the surrounding areas. Of course the recommendation is coming from the smaller schools who were the original promoters asking for the ousting of Cedar City and Dixie from Region Eight and 2A competition "because they are too big." An alternative suggestion to those who would like to break up Cedar and Dixie studentbodies, developing two sets of teams-what thev would do with music, debate, etc., is unknown-is to consolidate the smaller schools to be more competitive with Cedar and Dixie. An example could be pointed out in Beaver county where they have two high schools-Beaver and Milford. Instead of competing separately let them merge their interests into a single effort where studentbodies could rally round a single team, eliminate some of the coaching staff, etc. and then play the bigger schools. It's over simplified we know, but no more so than the proposal of dividing Cedar and Dixie. We could have a Millard county team, a Kane and Wayne County team, etc. For our part the intitiative to change at this point is up to the smaller schools. If they want in, let them make the changes. We've already been through the process and frankly feel that it would be a step backwards for Cedar and Dixie. |
