Show LadyT-bird Spikers gear for Play-offs Despite a second consecutive con-secutive "down" week, the Southern Utah State College volleyball team has assured itself of a spot in both conference con-ference and regional playoffs. The Thunderbirds will close their regular season matches Friday by hosting Snow College at 6 p.m. and Utah Technical College of Provo at 8 p.m. in War Memorial Fieldhouse. "These two non-conference non-conference matches will be good for us to work out some of the problems in our game and to prepare for the conference championship match," Joy Peterson, SUSC coach says. The T-Birds' cinched the championship of the Western Division of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference last week with a victory over Fort Lewis College in a match at Cedar City (7-15, 15-13, 15-5,7-15, 15-7). 15-7). That win closed the regular RMAC matches for the 'Birds; they finished with a 7-1 record. ' ' Because of their Western )ivision title, SUSC will host the conference championship cham-pionship match, probably on - November 9 at 7 p.m. in War Memorial Fieldhouse. "We tare still working out the detaHs, but that's the way it looks," Peterson explains. The T-Birds are the defending RMAC champion. ' 'Most likely opponent in the conference square-off is either Regis College (last year's Eastern Division titlist) or University of Southern Colorado. SUSC also earned a berth in the Intermountain Regional Tournament (Nov. 16-17) at Denver, Colorado, with their division championship. cham-pionship. Six teams will . compete in a tournament hosted by Metropolitan State for the right to enter national competition. The regional tournament will include Western and Eastern Division RMAC winners, the top two teams in the Intermoutain Conference Con-ference (probably Metro State and University of Northern Colorado) and two at large teams. "Just who those two at large teams are is totally up in the air at this time," Peterson explains. For last week, SUSC won a total of two matches (over Fort Lewis and Ricks College), but lost three (to Montana State University, Dixie College, and Brigham Young University jayvees). "We've had better weeks," Peterson confesses, "but we do know that we can play well if we put our minds to it." The Montana State and Dixie losses and the Ricks victory came in the USU invitational tournament, where the T-Birds finished a disappointing seventh. |
