Show LWV Propose Questions ForCouncil Candidates Candidates for the three Cedar City Council positions which will be decided in elections on Tuesday will answer questions prepared by the League of Women Voters tonight beginning at 8 a.m. at the media center in the Junior High School. The public is invited to attend and the discussion will also be braodcast live on KSUB AM radio station. The Candidates Night is being sponsored by the League of Women Voters and the Business Professional Womens' Association. Candidates have been given the questions to prepare their answers ahead of time and the candidates of each party and the independent candidate will have some choice in deciding the questions which they wish to answer. Answers will be limited to two minutes with a general question and answer period opened to the audience at the end of the formal discussion period. Following is the list of twnety questions which the League has prepared. .1. Do you favor a metropolitan type of law enforcement in which the city and county law enforcement is consolidated con-solidated under one system? Explain why. 2. Do you think the roads and streets in Cedar City are adequate and safe for traffic flow? Does Cedar J more street lights? 3. What are the biggest problems Cedar City will face in the next ten years? How would you try to facilitate the handling of these problems? 4. Do you favor the MX missile site being located near Cedar City? Do you think the economic benefits of MX outweigh the possible hazards of boom town growth and atomic attack? at-tack? 5. Why doesn't Cedar City have a Recycling Center? 6. The city recently adopted a new industrial park ordinance and also has passed inducement resolutions to help two businesses (General Dairy and K-Mart) locate in Cedar City. Do you agree with these actions? Do you think the city should be involved in attracting new business and if so, specifically how? 7. Do you ' think providing recreational opportunities is part of a city's responsibility? If so, what would you try to do which is not currently being done? 8. What solution would you propose to solve the current crisis with the city sewage treatment plant? 9. Should city government try to plan and make projections regarding future growth in this area, or just let it occur? If you favor planning, where do you feel it is especially needed? 10. Within three years the city will probably have to turn back to the Iron County School District the building it now uses for city offices. What plans should the city be devleoping to deal with this situation? 11. The cost of Cedar City's involvement in-volvement in a municipally-owned power system has been under study for two years? How much study do you feel is necessary before a decision can be made? 12. Do you favor the power ownership question being put to a vote of Cedar City citizens? 13. Do you favor municipal power for Cedar City? If so, does this mean that you favor Cedar City's joining the Southwest Power Federation? 14. Have you given any thought to what should be done at the North Highland Drive subsidence area where homes were moved to avoid further damage due to soil subsidence. sub-sidence. The land has become almost without value and there are many open basement sites, which create a safety hazard. 15. ,: Would you' favor the city and county cooperating on a waste disposal and landfill operation? 16. What attempts would you make, if elected, to facilitate planning and zoning coordination between Cedar City and the county particularly in the valley area near Cedar City? 17. How do you feel about providing jogging and bicycle paths within the city?. If you favor such provisions, where would you make them available? 18. If you feel that developing the city's interest in the Kolob Water is important, what if anything, would you do which is not presently being done? 19. Should Cedar City adopt a new master plan at this time or should it wait until the site for the MX missile has been decided? Why? 20. What is the most important issue before the voters? (Each candidate will have an opportunity to answer time permitting). |
