Show SUSC Debaters Garner Trophies season--Cara Thorup, a sophomore from Bingham, and Tracy Ashman, a freshman fresh-man from Timpview, broke into the final rounds in oratory. Kayrori Madson, a junior from Payson, was a finalist in after dinner and in expository speaking, winning win-ning a third place trophy in expository speaking out of a field of 79 contestants. Other I.E.'s with impressive im-pressive first time records were Neva Black, North Sevier, Kathleen Oaks and Tracy Ashman, Timpview, who all competed in oratory. Kelaine Crookston, Provo, competed in oratory and in oral interpretation of literature; debater Allen Burch also competed in oral interpretation; and Kim DeAdder, Orem, narrowly missed breaking into the finals in extemporaneous speaking. The SUSC squad placed fifth in the tournament. Sweepstakes honors were won by the Air Force Academy which, Smith said, "literally dominated the entire tournament." While the bulk of the SUSC forensics squad competes at the University of New Mexico Invitational this weekend, two debate teams, Chris Kerecman and Frank Misak, and Karen Reeves, Cedar City, and Tove Horton, Springville, will compete in a tournament at Loyola, Los Angeles. More trophies have been added to the Southern Utah State College forensics showcase following a strong squad showing at the Pikes Peak Invitational. "It was a very fine 'first time out' tournament for our I.E.'s that is for students competing in individual events," SUSC debate coach M. L. Smith, said, "and we made an excellent showing, point-wise, with our junior division debaters." After competing against teams from the 36 colleges and universities represented at the Colorado College contest, three T-Bird teams broke into out rounds in debate. Freshmen Allen Burch and Jerri Price ended up with first and fourth places, respectively, in the total number of speaker points awarded in junior debate competition. Burch is a theater arts and communications major from Timpview; Price is a communications major from Bingham. The duo won a third place trophy, losing in out rounds in a 2-1 decision to a team from Claremont College. The team from Pamona, California, also defeated SUSC sophomores Vickie Green, Bingham, and Chris Lathrop, Orem, in another junior division out round. Freshmen Denise Brooks and Scott Pullan, Bingham, won another third place trophy, being defeated by a team from Odessa College, Odessa Texas. Smith said , that the teams from Claremont and Odessa went on to battle for first and second places in the tournament. tour-nament. In senior division debate, veterans Chris Kerecman, Orem, and Frank Misak, Bingham, debated together for the first time, failing to break into out rounds by losing to a team from the University of Arizona.
