I'lr n " ' if hmit iihi f-'' ' r!7,iCi,, ,m i "J iii ir " ,L,,J Celebrating its twentieth birthday, the South Elementary enjoyed a festive birthday party this past Monday. South Elementary students gathered in an assembly to hear Dr. Clair Morris relate some of the early history of the school. Dr. Morris was principal at" the time the building was dedicated on October 29, 1959. The building was construct by Wehyer Construction from Salt Lake City for a total cost of $871 thousand dollars. Replacement cost for the building today is well over 2V2 million. Dr. Morris remembers that before there was any grass around the school, the younger grades had to play on the large patio. Because of the large enrollment, the patio was quite crowded and windows were broken often. As , the grass grew and each class participated in planting the shrubs and trees, the building became safe and Dr. Morris complimented the students for the fine care that has been given the building since that time. Three people who remember the first year of the school are still there. Mrs. Barbara Alger, Mrs. Carmen Hepworth and current principal Clemont Adams, were all teachers that year. Enrollment was 613 students compared to today in .the expanded building of 511. The birthdyry assembly was highlighted by appearance of the Nancy Sorenson singers and the Cedar High Country Fiddlers. All of the students sang Happy Birthday South Elementary and Dr. Morris, Principal Adams and PTA President Kathy Leydsman lit the candles on a large birthday cake that will be on display in the school's front hall. Each class celebrated with punch and cupcakes furnished by the PTA and parents. Happy Birthday South Elementary ! TWENTY YEARS AGO.
