Show Lady T-birds rely on Suzie Pedersen A graduate of Cedar City High School is playing a major role in the recent string of Southern Utah State College volleyball victories. Susan Pedersen, who lettered in volleyball, basketball and softball at CHS, is a regular starter and among the top spikers on the Thunderbird squad. "We've got a number of new players'who are blending blen-ding well with our strong veterans to make us a respectable team," Joy Peterson, SUSC coach, indicates. in-dicates. The T-Birds are the defending champions of the 10-team Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. "If we can continue to play as well as we have recently, we could easily win the Western Division title and host the conference championships," Peterson says. Pedersen played in a semi-regular semi-regular role last year. "Suzie is the type of player who is a joy to coach. She has good skills, and she is always willing to do whatever is necessary for the good of the team. Because of this, we have received rapidly improving performances from our new players, Peterson explains. "That probably at least partially explains our recent success after a very slow start." The women's athletics program at Southern Utah State College has become vastly more significant in recent years, "We plan to continue encouraging program growth in women's athletics," Dr. Kathryn Berg, women's athletic coordinator said. Most SUSC women s teams compete with nearly all other collegiate institutions in-stitutions in Utah and with four-year colleges in Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Nevada, and Arizona. The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, which provides the bulk of the Thunderbird schedules, includes college division schools (four-year institutions) in-stitutions) in Utah, Colorado and New Mexico. A home-and-home exchange is scheduled with RMAC teams in most sports. Susan, who has been captain of the SUSC basketball team for two years and MVP one year, is the daughter of Alfred and Doris Pedersen, Beryl. She is majoring in business management and minoring in police science at Southern Utah State College. |
