Show School for Potato Growers The third annual school for potato growers will be held at the Beryl Community Center on Thursday, February 22. Starting time will be 10:00 a.m. with a scheduled 3:00 p.m. closing. Four topics will be discussed by potato specialists. They are: (1) Insect Control, (2) Disease Control, (3) Harvest, (4) Storage. Jay Garner, Potato Specialist from Blackfoot, Idaho and Sherman Thomson, Plant Pathologist from Utah State University Extension Service will be there to discuss the four subjects with producers. Lynn Esplin, Iron County Agent stated that Iron County produces about 2500 acres of potatoes each year. This is approximately 62,500,000 pounds of potatoes. Table potatoes, processing potatoes and seed potatoes are all grown in Iron County. Growers from all Southern Utah Counties are invited to attend the school. The school is being sponsored by Utah State University Extension Service. Louis Jensen, Extension Agronomists from Utah State University will be the principal speaker at the three meetings. The first meeting will be at the Courthouse in Parowan at 10:00 a.m. This will be ' followed by a second meeting at the Beryl Community Center at 2:00 p.m. and a final meeting at the Cedar City Public Library at 7:00 p.m. Mr. Jensen is well known by farmers and ranchers in this area. His presentation on weed control in alfalfa will be a continuation of a series of educational meetings on alfalfa hay production being sponsored by the Iron County Extension Ex-tension Service. Lynn Esplin, Iron County Agent, reports that copies of the new "1979 Chemical , Weed Control Guide for Utah" will be available for distribution at the meetings. The public is invited. |
