Show Parowan City joins Federation The Parowan City Council voted unanimously to join the Southwest Utah Power Federation and the Southwest South-west Utah Power Agency last week. Mayor Jim Robinson siad that the city's ! power board had recom- mended the decision to join SWUPF and the agency. The ' city has selected Coun-J Coun-J cilman Gayle Wood to be ! their representative for both groups. Wood heads the city's power committee and Robinson said that Wood is knowledgeable in power matters. "Parowan City has been studying the question of joining SWUPF for about six weeks. We don't have as much at stake as some of the other areas that are considering con-sidering joining since we own our own system. We think that it may cut down on the transmission costs of our electricity," said Robinson. He signed the official documents on Monday and copies will be sent to SWUPF's attorney Geroge Fadel. Robinson reported to the council on the progress of cooperative efforts by commercial interests and the city concerning a $100,000 Urban Development Grant. The money could be used to provide curbs and gutters, overhead lighting, underground electrical utilities, the possibility of purchasing land for commercial com-mercial park development, a Chamber of Commerce center, or another project. Robinson will present the proposals at the next Bank Board meeting. Both the city and commercial interests must agree on a project to receive the funding. The council discussed a recent visit by representatives represen-tatives of the federal housing and Urban Development Depatment. Parowan has applied for a Small Cities Grant through HUD to give low income housing assistance, to purchase new fire department equipment, and to build additional water storage capabilities. The representatives were shown the areas which the city is interested in improving im-proving and will report to their Denver office before HUD makes a final decision. Robinson reported that the city has retained architect John Rowley to draw plans and schematics for the improvements at the Municipal Swimming Pool. While Robinson feels that the city's present funds will make quite a few improvements, im-provements, the council discussed applying for funds from the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, the Iron County School District of the Iron County Commission if additional ad-ditional funds are needed. The council agreed that if additional funds are necessary but cannot be obtained, that only the work which the city has funding for will be done. After an executive session, the Mayor expressed the regrets of the City Council that the city could not afford to hire Police Officer Wayne Townsend in the near future. The city had planned to hire Townsend who has been working voluntarily since Dec. 1 using CETA funds, but recent cutbacks have made CETA funds for the position unavailable. |
