Show Incarceration of Young People Law Changed Governor Scott Matheson has signed legislation which will allow incarceration of young people at the Youth Development Center up to age 21 The legislation, Senate Bill 80, was sponsored by Senator Richard J. Carling (R-Salt Lake). The amended statute will allow the maximum age of persons committed to the Youth Development Center to be 21 instead of 19 as the old law provided. "This legislation does not change the spirit of the law," said Governor Matheson. "It simply makes a common sense change. There is no doubt that some people at age 20 or 21 do not belong at the prison and should be placed at the Youth Development Center under proper circumstances." Utah Law had previously specified that no one committed com-mitted to the Youth Development Center could be held beyond age 19. The amendment signed by the Governor still allows the superintendent at the center to release anyone from the school after six months with satisfactory evidence of acceptable performance and behavior. |
