" It all happened in the second sec-ond inning. Cedar High School Redmen with a series of errors and mental mistakes lost the race for the southern division baseball base-ball championship of Region Eight to the Dixie Flyers of St. George. The Flyers capitalized on the Redmen mistakes to push in seven runs in the second inning in-ning and went on to capture the title by a score of 10-3. The game was played in St. George Monday afternoon after af-ter the two clubs had battled to a " deadlock at the end -f regulation league play. Cedar and Dixie met in the open ser. des of league play and split a double header. Both teams then went on to 7-1 league records re-cords forcing Monday's playoff. play-off. Coach John Nielsen's Red-men Red-men got off to a good start, but it all came to a crashing end in the second frame. Cedar won the flip and elected elec-ted to be home team. They set the Flyers down In liie top of the first frame then came on strong in the bottom of the inning to push in two runs on just two hits to move out to a 2-0 lead. In the second inning the Flyers took advantage of the miscues of the Redmen pushing push-ing in the seven runs then coasting on to a victory behind be-hind the six hit pitching of Joff Bradshaw. Nolan Roberts, Otdar High starter, suffered the mound loss, but three Redmen all took a crack at the pitching; chores. Roberts was lifted in the second in favor of Cornell Christensen and Kevin Cox came in in relief in the fourth four-th and collected the best record rec-ord on the mound recording a total of six strikeouts over three and a third innings. Roberts came back to the mound to finish the game in the top of the seventh. Miscues on the bases also hurt the Redmen as two men were picked off second base with potential scoring runs. The crucial pickoff came in the fifth when the Redmen had gotten the first two men on base without an out. The pickoff took the wind out of the Redmen sails and they could not muster a come back. The Flyers now move on to a best of three game series |
