Three nationally famous musicians will be guest lecturers lec-turers at the Western States Choral Symposium to be conducted con-ducted by Southern Utah State College June 19 through 30, it was announced by Dr. Blaine Johnson, director of choral music at the college. The two-week two-week program will be based at Brian Head Ski Resort. Norman Luboff, conductor of the touring and recording Nor-man Nor-man Luboff Choir, will be one of the speakers during the symposium. Dr. Johnson said Mr. Lu'boiffs many accomplishments accomp-lishments in commercial music mus-ic "make him one of the world's wor-ld's most knowledgeable men in the fields of jazz, papular music, and related art forms." Richard Carpenter, who with his sister Susan has made 'The Carpenters" one of the top popular recording groups in the nation, will also address ad-dress symposium participants. A gifted composer and jazz pianist, Mr. Carpenter will conduct a seminar in arranging arrang-ing for the vocal styles of popular music. Tara Leigh, one of the "Ding-a-Ling Sisters" featured on the Dean Martin television show, will talk about the problems and style of television televis-ion and stage vocal music. She has had classical training as well as extensive experience experi-ence in the papular medium. Dr. Johnson said that Dr. Frank Pooler, chairman of the Choral Department of California Calif-ornia State College at Long Beach will head the symposium symposi-um faculty. "Dr. Pooler is acknowledged ac-knowledged as one of the e-lite e-lite of choral conductors and composers," Dr. Johnson said. The symposium will cover the full spectrum of choral art, according to Dr. Johnson. Areas to be discussed and demonstrated include the school chorus, boy's ensemble, girl's ensemble, mixed chamber cham-ber ensemble, vocal techniques class. Seminars will be conducted in conducting, composition, folk music, and creative expression. ex-pression. Many basic music fundamentals will be taught and demonstrated. Special interest Workshops will be offered in the writing and performance of popular, folk, show, twentieth century choral, and renaissance music. mus-ic. Dr. Johnson said that participants par-ticipants in the symposium should be in their final two years at high school or of college col-lege age. No auditions are held for symposium attendance, attend-ance, but prior choral experience experi-ence is required. Up to six hours of college credit is available for the sessions. ses-sions.
