Show Melissa Thorley winsscholarship Melissa Thorely, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Wesley P. Lar-sen Lar-sen of Cedar City, has received a scholarship to attend the Music Academy of the West at Santa Barbara, Calif. Miss Thorley was selected after auditioning for Maurice Abravanel, conductor of the Utah Symphony, and Prof. Bert Senopsky, concert violinist violin-ist and director at Peabody Institute In-stitute of Music in Baltimore, Maryland. The summer study at the Academy will give the scholarship scholar-ship winner the opportunity to study violin performance with Prof. Senopsky. In addition to the Academy selection the University of Utah Music department has announced that Miss Thorley was awarded a scholarship to the U from the Federated Music Mu-sic Clubs. This award was made in recognition of the recipients re-cipients contributions in the field of music, her high scholastic schol-astic standing and participation participa-tion in music activities. The most recent of her activities act-ivities was the presentation of her composition "Sonatina for Violin and Piano" in a concert con-cert conducted by Theodore Ant oniou, composer-in-resi-dence at the University of Utah. Miss Thorley is a composition composi-tion student studying under Mr. Anton iou. The youthful artist will be remembered as a student at Southern Utah State College and as a valedictorian at Cedar High School. |
