Show I June destined to be critical month j for livestock and crop production 1 June is destined to be a critical month in the state of Utah in regard to Livestock and crop production for the coming year, according to reports re-ports of the Utah Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. Moisture is the key word and all phases of agriculture and livestock operations will be affected if we do not get relief from a nearly three month drought in the state, the report indicated. As of June 1, the report states "feed conditions on i ranges now in use averaged good for the State but many sections are getting dry. Lack of significant precipitation for the past three months is causing caus-ing drought conditions on low elevation ranges, particularly in the north and western central cen-tral counties. "Precipitation Ls needed to maintain spring range feed condition and prevent premature prema-ture moving of livestock to higher summer ranges. Some high mountain summer ranges are still partially snow covered cover-ed but plant growth is looking 1 goon. ' "As of June 1 the range feed condition now in use was reported re-ported at 80 percent." , Crop reports are similar, as ' Indicated by the following report. re-port. "Weather during May was much drier than normal resulting in damage to dryland dry-land crops and feed on lower 1 ranges. Crop prospects for ar- eas served by reservoir storage remain generally good but high temperatures and lack of rain have necessitated heavy hea-vy usage of irrigation and it has been difficult to get adequate ade-quate stands on some row crops. High temperatures and dry weather dried non-irrigated crop and range lands rapidly. rap-idly. Spring planting of all crops as of June 1 was essentially essen-tially complete. Alfalfa condition con-dition is rated fair to good with first cutting well under way." I The report indicates that prospects are excellent for apricots ap-ricots and tart cherries, very good for peaches, fair to good for pears and sweet cherries. Some pear and sweet cherry orchards were frozen out or 1 had poor pollination while I others have a good set and I show promise of a full crop, i it was indicated. |
