Show American League Coleman holds league lead with two wins Coleman 6 1 .857 Milne 4 3 .571 Spilsbury-Graff 4 3 .571 KiwanU 2 4 .333 Rotary 1 6 .143 With only two remaining games In the first half of play in the Cedar American Little League Coleman has wrapped up the lead and will at laast battle for the title at the conclusion con-clusion of season play. Coleman picked up a pair of victories during the p;st week and they relied un tlie strong pitching arm of Lee Holmes to account for both victories. Holmes shutout Kiwanis 2 to 0 in an abbreviated four inning game that was called owing to rain. Holmes in that game gave up only two hits while his teammates were collecting col-lecting three, but converted two runs from the battle. Steve Hafen suffered the loss for Ki-wanis. Ki-wanis. Holmes collected nine strikeouts in the four innings. Monday night it was Holmes again on the mound as Coleman Cole-man took the measure of Milne by a score of 5 to 1. A-gain A-gain it was a two hitter for Holmes. Coleman dominated the game with 15 hits, although al-though they produced only 5 runs in the six innings of play. It was Spilsbury-Graff, however, who really climbed in the standings picking up three victories during the week. S-G handed two losses to Kiwanis then Tuesday evening ev-ening defeated Rotary to move into a tie for second place in the standings. In the first encounter with Kiwanis it was a 14-7 victory for S-G with Chris Petty and Paul Savage combining on the mound. Ray Meyers suffered the loss. Petty also led the hitting with four hits in as many trips including two doubles. Savage collected 3 hits in 4 trips and also had a double. It was Petty and Rodney Wadsworth who combined to hand Kiwanis a 5 to 4 loss Monday evening in a makeup game and it was the first extra ex-tra inning game of the season in the league. It was the eighth inning before Spilsbury Graff pushed in the winning runs. Kiwanis held a slim 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the sixth but S-G pounded out three hits to score a run and force the game into extra in- nings. In the eighth frame Wadsworth singled, Savage doubled and they both scored on a single by Brent Jones to pick up the win. Tuesday night it was S-G again 9 to 7 in a seesaw victory vic-tory over Rotary. Rotary out-hit out-hit S-G 9 to 5 but it was the Spilsbury crew that picked up the win. Paul Savage went all the way on the mound. Rotary sent Mike Velarde, Brad Lar-sen Lar-sen and Rick Rollo to the mound in a losing effort. Top hitter in the contest was Rollo with 3 for 4 including a double. doub-le. In the other contest of the week it was Milne scoring a 5 to 1 victory over Rotary. Robert Ro-bert Shirts and Brad Hunter combined for the mound victory. vic-tory. Ricky Rollo and Mike Velarde Ve-larde saw duty for the losers. Two home runs dominated the action. Brad Bulloch hit a single round triper in the second sec-ond frame and it was Brad Hunter who belted a two run homer in the fifth frame to put the game on ice. |
