Show Tigers Defeat Redmen To Clinch Area Diamond Crown Hurricane Tigers walked off with the Region Six baseball crown Monday afternoon with a decision 8 to 1 victory over the Cedar City Redmen on the local field. Boyd Gubler, on the mound for Hurricane, allowed only three hits and that combined with the errorless ball of his team mates was sufficient to snuff out any hopes of the Redmen to repeat as Region baseball champions. The Tigers also won the title in 1955. The single run scored by the Redmen came in the sixth inning in-ning with Bevan Corry pounding out a home run with a solid drive deep into left center field. In that inning the Redmen scored two of their three hits but Cor-ry's Cor-ry's homer accounted for the only on-ly run. Gayle Simklns followed Corry with a single but died on base. Earlier, in the fourth inning, in-ning, Sheldon Sargent, second baseman, singled for the only other hit for the Redmen. Art Pryor was on the mound for the Redmen and he allowed nine hits. However, they were scattered with Hurricane collecting collect-ing three each in the second and seventh Inning. Pryor struck out seven batters and allowed only two walks. That compared with Gubler's record of eight strikeouts strike-outs and two walks as well. The Redmen got off to a bad start, allowing a run in the first inning of play on two errors. Hurricane failed to hit in that Inning. It was the second inning that proved the Redmen's downfall. down-fall. In that Inning two errors put the flrsl two men on base and a walk by Pryor, his first of the game, loaded the bases. The next man singled with one run scoring and a nice throw-In by Corry in left field snuffed out the second man attempting to score. Two more hits, however, pushed in three more runs and the Redmen found themselves trailing 5 to 0. Cedar was charged with a total to-tal of six costly errors as compared com-pared to a single error by the Timers. Hurricane, as winner of the Region crown, will entertain, on their own field, the winner of Region Five In the quarterfinals of the state. That game is scheduled sched-uled for sometime next week. |
