Show SNOWS SNOW Burke Johnson Paces Broncos To Second Win Burke Johnson, on the mound for the College of Southern Utah baseball nine, paced himself through nine Innings of play Friday afternoon and chalked up his second conference win. The Broncos outclassed the Snow Badgers of Ephriam on the local lo-cal field 15 to 5. Johnson won the season opener for the Broncos against Carbon Eagles. One of the big aids to winning from Snow was the hit-ting hit-ting of Gene Secrist. Secrist poundcu out a double in the bottom of the second inning to drive in two runs and start a rally that ended with five runs scoring. Secrist later pounded out two singles and was again Instrumental In-strumental in the- seventh inning in-ning with his timely hitting. In that frame the Broncos again scored five runs. Winston Cleave of Snow was the losing pitcher, he was on the mound for three and a third innings before Coach Glen Clark called on Parry Brunno to relief. Brunno finished the game. The CSU Broncos, playing with a couple of untimely errors of their own, were, however, no match for the Badgers in that department. Snow was having all kinds of trouble with probably the biggest blow to the team's defense coming in the seventh inning. With two men out and Secrist on second and Bob Vest on first. Snow attempted a plckoff play at second with the center fielder coming in to cover the bag. Brunno Brun-no whirled and threw. As the peg reached second, Secrist and Cleave, then in center collided, and the ball went sailing into center field. Before the right fielder could retrieve the throw, Secrist had scored as well as Vest, who made it all the way from first, standing up. Aside from the two big innings, in-nings, the third and seventh for the Broncos, the hits were well apart. Only In one other Inning did Coach Cleo Petty's- Broncos add more than a single run. That was the sixth with two runs crossing the plate. The Broncos scored four runs from third on wild pitches. |
