Show Lions Hold Lead In National Little League TEAM STANDINGS Lions 4 1 .800 Elks 3 2 .600 Safeway 2 3 .400 Columbia 1 4 .200 Paul Koberts, on the mound for the Lions Tamers on two occasion oc-casion during the past week picked up a pair of wins to keep his team in first place in the National I,ittle League of Cedar City. All other teams of the league were on both the winning and losing side of the ledger during the week. Following is how they finished in the five games of the past week from Wednesday through Tuesday of this week. Columbia 5, Safeway 4 In this game Dallas Rarnhurst was on the mound for the winning win-ning Columbia team. Garry Gul- Iliford took the loss In spite of the fact that Safeway outhit Columbia 6 to 5. Each team had a home run with Rocky Moore on the swinging side for Safeway Safe-way and Ken Duerksen hitting one for Columbia. Lion 20. Safeway 4 This was the first win of the week for Paul Roberts of Lions. Dale Hansink was the loser for Safeway with Moore sharing mound duties. The strong batting of Lions was too much in this with a home run by Brent Russell, Rus-sell, a 10-year-old, and four extra ex-tra base hits including a triple by Lennio Olafson. Elks 19. Columbia 8 Two. three-run homers for Ramon Ra-mon Banks plus being the win- j ing pitcher made this a big game I for Elks. Hanks allowed but three j hits. In losing Richard Gillies and Dale Hatch allowed a total of 17 hits to the Rulers. Safeway 2. Elks 1 This is undoubtedly one of the tightest games of the year with Safeway pushing in the winning run in the las half of the final inning of play. Garry Gulliford was the winning pitcher, Robert Smith of Klks suffered the loss. Liks Had five hits compared to four for Safeway, three of which came off the bat of Gulliford. Gulliford hit to lead off the firs; inning and scored on a wild throw bak from the catcher to the pitcher. The score remained 1 to 0 until the top of the sixth frame when Smith lived on an error and moved to third on a single by Kent Berrett and tied the score on a bunt by Steve Rol-lo. Rol-lo. In the bottom half, however, Danny Walker, after walking, scored on a double by Dale Hansink Han-sink for the winning run. Smith in losing collected 14 strikeouts in the first five innings of play. |
