Show Commissioner Gives Suggestions on Shade Tree Care During the long dry summer months ahead an important item in the care of shade trees is proper pro-per watering. Along with the growth of any city more curb and gutter, more concrete ditches and other con-tro'. con-tro'. of surface water becomes a natural part of the development. These .man-made structures often of-ten rob shade trees of their source of irrigation water. To offset this it is necessary to take steps to provide a water supply from some other source to furnish shade trees with the water wa-ter they need to keep them alive and healthy. This is particularity true with young trees which have not established a root system that is capable of reaching out or down into the soil for water. To help solve this problem. The Cedar Shade Tree and Beautifica-tion Beautifica-tion Commission, recommends that a good sized well, or water retaining area be established around the base of each shade tree that does not ha'e a natural source of water supply. This well should be filled regularly with water from a hose or other source that can be controlled, letting the well fill very slowly so that a good supply of water will have a chance to soak the soil around the root system of the tre. For small trees this should be done regularly at intervals of about a week or ten days. For larger trees it does not need to be done so ofter, j ssibly once each month, but more water should bf applied ns more is needed to supply the greater root system and the transpiration needs through the leaves. |
