Show High School Seniors Win State FFA Scholarships at Annual Convention Two students of the senior class in attending institutions of high-of high-of the Parowan High School were awarded scholarships to be used er learning during the annua,1 state convention of the Future Farmers of America at the New-house New-house Hotel in Salt Lake City last week end. The students winning the scholarships were Kent Whitney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Whit- i !' .La J .g 'JfTm , A I KENT WHITNEY JAMES TALBOT ney of Parowan, and James Talbot, Tal-bot, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orson Talbot of Paragonah. These two, with Thales Brown, chapter advisor; ad-visor; David Matheson, chapter member, and Miss Susan Benson, chapter sweetheart and her mother Clara Benson, attended last week's convention with Miss Benson representing the Parowan Chapter In the State Sweetheart competition. Whitney, who has been an active ac-tive member of the Parowan FFA Chapter for the past two years, was awarded one of the five Standard Oil Company scholarships scholar-ships given annually In Utah, the scholarship he received Is for $300. It can be used in any college col-lege or university In the seven western states' for study along any line he chooses. Kent is serving as chapter reporter re-porter this year, is president of the senior class and has been a member of the football and basketball teams for the past two years. He will represent the local high school at the Rotary Youth conference this month In t'alt Lake City, fie is also serving as president of the Parowan Stake Junior M Men this year. He ranks among the leaders of his class scholastically. Talbot served as chapter president pres-ident during the 1954-55 school year and was secretary the year before. He has held a high scholastic scho-lastic rating and was a member of the high school football team last fall. He has been very good In F F A project work during his high school years. He Is now serving the Paragonah Ward M. L A. as secretary and played M-men M-men basketball this winter. Jim will receive the $100 Carl Raymond Gray Union Pacific scholarship awarded annually to an Iron County Student In agriculture. agri-culture. The U. P. Railroad gives like scholarships In each county coun-ty which the railroad serves in the state of Utah. This scholarship scholar-ship specifies that It be used in an agricultural college for study In that field. Thales' Brown, advisor, states that both of these boys hav made plans to use their scholarships schol-arships at the College of Southern South-ern Utah next fall. |
