Show State Bowling Tourney Hugh Success The Annual Utah State Women's Wo-men's Bowling Association Tournament Tour-nament opened in Cedar City Saturday, March 9, and will continue con-tinue through March 31 at the Cedar Bowling Lanes. Host for the event is the Cedar Ce-dar City Women's Bowling Assn., and a grand opening program was conducted Saturday evening to officially welcome the expected ex-pected 900 plus women bowlers of the state who are expected to participate. The tournament is under the direct supervision of Marilyn Mc Millan of Salt Lake City, president presi-dent of the state association and the secretary, Grace Qulnn, is in Cedar City throughout the tournament tour-nament to set up schedules and record scores. 'uimtf- the tournament during the open-1 lng week end of play but at least one Cedar City woman, Rosie Graff, after action Tuesday has taken the lead in the singles competition. Miss Graff came up with a 683 handicap series to take first place and move Elaine Berger of Salt Lake City, the early leader, into second place with a 651. Mrs. Berger, however, has the top scratch series of 593 to lead in that department of the singles compeltion. Ann Slattery, popular Salt Lake City bowler, took the early lead in two departments. They are the all-events, where she has a score of 1706 that's the combination com-bination of singles, doubles and team competition and she teams with Clca Van Natta, also of Salt Lake City, to lead in both scratch and handicap in doubles compeltion. Leading the way for Mrs. Slat-tery Slat-tery was the highest series rolled to date in the tournament, a 627 scratch in the doubles. She had games of 223, 214, and 190. In moving into the lead in the singles Miss Graff of Cedar City had two games over the 200 mark, including a 210 and 211. Another Cedar City bowler, Colleen Sherratt, moved into sixth place in the singles competition compe-tition with a 622 handicap series. In doubles competition another Salt Lake City team is currently in second place with a 1200 even. They are Jo Oswald and Chloe Knight. Two Cedar City teams also moved into the top ten Tuesday. Tues-day. A team of Anna Cower and Carlyn Nelson were in sixth place with a 1179 and right behind be-hind them in seventh were Maude Strate and Ruth Seegmil-ler Seegmil-ler with a 1175. Salt Lake teams dominate in the teaa division with Orchid Bowl Kegler Lounge leading in the handicap with a 2866 series. Leader In the scratch division is Halmar of Salt Lake City with a 2622 and that placed them second sec-ond in handicap as well with a 2350. Down the line In fifth place Is KSUB of Cedar City with a 2805. The team consists of Evelyn Eve-lyn Jones, La Rue Morris, Virginia Miller. Dorothy Heap and Lura Stapley. A capacity crowd was on hand for the opening exercises Saturday Satur-day evening and teams representing repre-senting every local association in the state were on hand to participate par-ticipate in the opening found. Bowling will continue each day throughout this week then will continue on a week end basis for the remainder of the month, Miss Quinn stated. An official business meeting of the State Association will also be conducted this week end as a regular part of the tournament. Business of the association, including in-cluding the election of officers for the coming year will be a part of the sessions. |
