Show I Parowan Elementary School Undertakes Fine Supervised Physical Fitness Program Based on the Youth Physical Fitness program of th President s 1961 Council on Youth Fitness, students of the Parowan Elementary Elemen-tary School recehe a careiully supervised physical fitness pro gram tailored to the physical individuality in-dividuality of each student, ac cording to a news release from the school. The upper grades have three varying length periods per weeK In the multipurpose room and or the dining room. The other grades spend less time, but every student receives a minimum of an average of 13 1 minutes per day in physical I training. At these sessions, Mr. Leake said, "There has never been 8 j greater need to help the youth of America develop the physical i attributes of strength, agility, ! flexibility and endurance thru school physical education pro-: grams. This need Is accentuated because ot our age of automa- j tion, leisure, easy living and material ma-terial abundance." j A visit to one of the classes' will find the children engaged in calisthenics (with or without 1 music), Jump-the-rope, all types of running games, various ball games, hop scotch, tether ball, all types of rhythm activities to; music, etc. Mr. Applegate states that the students and faculty j wiioienearnniy accept ana sup ports the activity. The students are keenly Interested in developing develop-ing strong, healthy bodies. "All exercises," Mr. Applegate con tinues, "have been chosen which contribute to (1) strength, (2) agility, (3) flexibility, and 4 endurance four essential ingredients in-gredients of physical fitness. Some exercises are especially modified for gins." Tests are administered regu-laily regu-laily and Individual progress records rec-ords are kept In order to continually contin-ually evaluate the program with emphasis on self-evaluation. This also provides a strong motivation for development within with-in the individual pupil. I |
