Show Cedar Redmen Hand Dixie Flyers Their Only Defeat of Season, 58 to 49, on Cedar Floor Led by Fred Esplin who con- ( trolled bankboards, the Cedar i High School Redmen picked off the prize plum Friday night as tK-y defeated the league leading Dixie Flyers by a score of 58 to i 49. Esplin's control of the boards in this game appeared to be the key to the success that Coach j Richard Hobbs used to set back j the Flyers. It was the first loss j of the league season for the Dixie crew. ' Two important victories of top rivals during the past two weeks for the Redmen brand them as the team on the move in the Dixie Dix-ie Division of Region Eight. The Redmen have gained the momentum momen-tum with victories over Kanab and Dixie to put them in second place in the league standings as they move Into the final weeK of play The Redmen moved out to an early lead against the Flyers taking a 6 to 1 margin then increasing in-creasing it to six points at 10 to 4 midway in the period. The Myers, My-ers, however, came to life and Roland Miles knotted the score at 12-all with just two seconds remaining re-maining in the quarter. In the second quarter the Red-men Red-men got off a pair of fast breaks and Bruce Holmes twice on a one on one beat his man and 1 Sandy Webster added another ( bucket to put the Redmen back in the lead 18 to 14. The Flyers came bounding back to tie it and the Rmen came through .the rest of the period nursing a slim two point margin until Esplin Es-plin scored on a tip and Dave Jensen scored on a drive. Scott . Nelson, the leading scorer for the I Redmen, got his first bucket of j the night at the buzzer to give i the Cedar City crew a five point ; bulge at the half, 30 to 25. I The third quarter belonged to 1 Sam Sampson of the Flyers. The district's leading scorer, he was !;eld to five points in the first half, but appeared to be upstop-able upstop-able In the third quarter as he hit for 10 points himself and , the Flyers outscored the Redmen 15 to 12 to move the s."ore to 42 ' to 40 at the three quarter mark, j As the fourth period opened, j Webster and Nelson hit from the field to push the Redmen margin back to six at 46 to 40, but the Flyers came back to tie it at 46 all. Nelson, an a drive, connected and picked up a third point on a foul twice in the last two minutes min-utes of play to boost the margin to six and the Redmen, from a stall, were able to increase it to nine in the final minute to pick up the victory. Although Esplin was the big factor on the boards the defensive defen-sive minded Webster was also a key factor holding one of the leading Flyer scorers, Barry Hunt, to just two points on two of four from the foul line. Coach Hobbs went with only six men In the contest. Esplin at center, Nelson and Webster at forwards and Holmes at guard went the distance. John Black was the starting guard and gave way only briefly to David Jensen in that position.
