Show Chamber of Commerce Makes Plans To Encourage Tourist Stopover At a special meeting of the board of directors of the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce on Monday evening, C. B. Cooley, director di-rector of adult education at the College of Southern Utah, was appointed as chairman of a proposed pro-posed tourist information school to be conducted this month. Mr. Cooley met with the directors direc-tors and proposed a program whereby materials for the contemplated con-templated three phase program would be gathered from local sources. Under his plan the material ma-terial would then be checked for possible duplications after which mimeographed copies would be made available. He also proposed that each phase of the course, historical, economic and scenic attractions and recreation, be given in a period per-iod of three weeks. Each of the subjects would be treated twice each day with people with local knowledge on these subjects handling han-dling the classes. Merchants Asked to Cooperate Merchants will be asked to cooperate in the program which it is hoped will be completed before the heavy tourist travel begins in June. Mr. Cooley will select his own committee and materials will be gathered immediately. im-mediately. The decision to hold this school was reached at a recent joint meeting of all civic clubs. Other methods of holding the tourist in Cedar City for longer periods of time were discussed at the meeting and the cooperative coopera-tive efforts of the various committees com-mittees of the chamber were solicited so-licited in aiming their objective in the same direction. Dr. John Beal, president of the chamber, proposed that the chamber board accept a promotional promo-tional program for the summer school at C S U as one of the organization's major projects, after af-ter Dr. Daryl Chase, school representative rep-resentative ta the board, discussed the feasibility of the chamber soliciting students this year. Dr. Beal pointed out that we make every effort to hold the tourist in Cedar City for one day when we can with very little effort, ef-fort, hold a student in Cedar City anywhere from six weeks to nine months. |
