Show Grant Seegmiller Receives Coveted Jaycee Distinguished Service Award I Announcement of the recipient of the coveted Distinguished Dis-tinguished Service Award for 1954 was made at the DSA banquet held by the Junior Chamber of Commerce Wednesday Wed-nesday evening at Hotel El Escalante. Winner of the award, which was given on the basis of community activity, business gains and leadership ability, was Grant Seegmiller. It was pointed out that Seegmiller is an active member of the Lions Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the Jaycees. He has served as president of the Cedar City Wildlife Federation through 1954 and in No vember, In the Interest of government, govern-ment, was appointed to the city council to replace Marion F. Grames, deceased. The announcement and presentation presen-tation of the DSA pin was made at the climax of the banquet that was enjoyed by about 80 loyal supporters. J. Elliot Cameron, superintend-ent superintend-ent of Sevier County schools, was the principal speaker of the evening. eve-ning. A young man himself, 30, Cameron directed his remarks to the field of education. He pointed out that a basic education today does not simply include the three Rs, as it did in the past. He listed three additional addi-tional Rs that are necessary in our educational system of today. Tnese three Rs he lists as challenges chal-lenges to educators and instructors. instruc-tors. They are: 1. Rights, as set down by the constitution of the United States of America; 2, Re spect, for our fellowman, and 3. Responsibility for our actions. The American way of life, that of "doing it yourself," he compared com-pared to other types. "If," he stated, stat-ed, "you want the state to do it for you it's socialism, if you want your comrade to do it for you, that's communism, but if you do it yourself, that's Americanism and that is what we must teach in our schools today."
