Show Activities Board Reverses Decision; Hi School Band Attends Helldorado After much delay, confusion and many contradictions the Cedar Ce-dar City high school band was finally permitted to make the trip to the Las Vegas Helldorado and to march in the parade Sunday Sun-day afternoon. True, the permission to make the trip came so late that it was extremely difficult to complete arrangements for the trip and get the group organized for the excursion ex-cursion and to to the Nevada city in time for the parade. However, How-ever, with typical community support and almost unequalled determination on the part of the students the efforts of the Utah High School Activities Association Associa-tion to stop the town and band from participating in the inter- representatives of the people, and the most that the activities board can boast is delegated authority, authori-ty, although we have been unable un-able to learn just who delegated that authority to the particular group, or who could possibly delegate such authority to the community activity, were thwarted. thwart-ed. The Iron County board of education edu-cation had granted permission i for the band to make the trip, J but the Activities association board overruled the school board I and threatened to disqualify the Cedar school from any participation partici-pation in state activities if the trip were made. This in spite of the fact that the Iron County board is cm nosed of the elected activities board. 1 After once ruling against the band making the trip, the chairman chair-man of the board, when an indignant in-dignant populace tried to protest and ascertain the real reason be hind the action, went Into the typical stall of being unavailable and absolutely out of reach of telephone or telegraph. Late Sat-J Sat-J urday afternoon, after it was apparently ap-parently too late for the band to arrange for the trip, the chair- man was finally reached by telephone tele-phone but he steadfastly re-1 fused to change from the original decision. Apparently the board i later had a change of heart, or figured that it was absolutely too late to make the trip and that a change in the ruling at this late hour would clear the board of further criticism, because be-cause a wire was received granting grant-ing permission. The grant, however, carried a provision that if the band did make the trip it could not ocm-peted ocm-peted in the terrible contest.. The trip was made, and reports from the Nevada city are that the band performed excellently) to brung much credit to Cedar City and to the school. Of course the band did not compete and i was not judged, except by the j thousands of people who lined the streets for the parade. The latter group's reaction seemed to class the Cedar City band as one i of the two outstanding bands to .participate in the Helldorado celebration. There is no question but that the band brought much credit to the school and the city, and made many friends, although in the eyes of the amazing activities association, had the band brought back a trophy or plaque of some kind it " e somehow' been "tainted glory". One of the most amazing things of the whole situation was when a member of the Iron County board made the statement state-ment that if the band "just hadn't had-n't asked for permission" to make the trip everything would have been al right. He went on to explain that there was a rule against such things and when permission was asked for there was nothing the activities board could do but deny the request, but that if the band had made the trip without asking permission permis-sion nothing would have been j said about. |
