Show Fire Prevention Training Is Featured In Elementary Schools Since the President of the United States has proclaimed this week, October 5 to 11, as National Fire Prevention Week, the teachers of the Cedar City Elementary School are doing everything possible to cooperate co-operate in reducing the hazards of fire. In every grade the teachers are talking about the proper care of matches and influmable materials. They are interesting their students In all ways in which good housekeeping house-keeping at home and at school may prevent costly fires. They are teaching teach-ing the children, too, what to do In case of fire. At any time during the day, those passing the school, may see the children suddenly emerge from all three doors of the building In orderly order-ly lines, and each group around a teacher In some place In the school yard, previouely decided upon. The person watching will know that he lc wltnesselng a very well organized fire drill, and when one considers that there are 824 students in the elementary school, that is a very good record. The lives of many children have been saved through fire drills, and though we hope that the time will never come when they will be actually ac-tually needed, still we must be prepared. pre-pared. When the Utah State Safety Council met In the Senate Chamber of the State Capitol, Friday, August Aug-ust 29, the Council recognized the fact that fire prevention Is largely an educational program and that mueii could be done by the school.-; In our school the teachers and students are discussing ways of eliminating fire hazards In homos, schools, communities and on farms. They are organizing fire patrols, making posters, writing themes and poems, and reading stories and plays that will make every child conscious of how terribly costly fires are, and anxious to do everything in his power to guard against and prevent fires. Every home will receive a Fire Safety Home Inspection blank. The students are very interested In how these blanks -will be answered In their homes, and In answering the questions the home owner will check his home for fire safety. The school received these blanks, with other fire prevention literature from the Utah Safety Council. Our school has been glad to Join with other agencies of our community commun-ity to encourage an adequate fire prevention program here In Cedar City. At this time, when there is such a housing shortage and when the National Board of Fire Underwriters Under-writers estimates the U. S. fire losses loss-es this year may exceed $700,000,000 the highest in U. S. history, this fire prevention program is vital. The Elementary school teachers are meeting the challenge by doing everything ev-erything In thefr power to support ihe movement. |
