Show Iron Mountain -Hurricane Teams Battle Features Tourney Opening Enterprise' and two Cedar City teams. Iron Mountain and Iroi County Record, won opening round games in the Southern I tali Softball tournament that opened in Cedar City Wednesday evening. Enterprise and the Iron County Record team won easily in one-sided encounters, but the Iron Mountain and Hurricane teams tangled in a tough battle from the opening pitch to the final out, with the Cedar team winning by a score of 3 to 2. Yorke Nelson pitching for Iron Mountain turned in an unusually fine performance, allowing only three hits, walking four men and striking out twelve batters. The visitors put together 2 singles in the fifth and aided by two infield errors pushed over two runs. Iron Mountain scored two runs in the third, LeRoy Spencer getting a single and Leo Cahoon living on an error, and both scoring scor-ing on a single by Glade Stephenson. Steph-enson. Cahoon scored again in the fifth when his single was followed fol-lowed by hits by Chester Cripps and Max Cowan, with an outfield error helping the cause. Lorrel Russel, Hurricane pitcher turned in a fine performance, allowing only six hits in the full seven innings. Enterprise took the measure of the St. George Firemen In the opening game by a score of 20 to G. Keith Staheli turning in a fine pitching performance for six innings and Farnsworth setting the St. George players down easily eas-ily in the final frame. Staheli allowed only four hits, and a hit batter was the best the Firemen could do against Farnsworth. Garth Penny, Iron County Record Rec-ord pitcher turned back the Inexperienced In-experienced Beaver team without a hit. Only four Beaver players got on base, three on walks and one on a error. Penny struck out eight. Poor control on the part of four Beaver pitchers contributed contrib-uted most to the Record's 19 to 1 victory. Second round games, to be played tonight, Includes the op. ener at 7:00 p. m. between Rocky Mountain Produce of St. George and Bradshaw Chevrolet of Cedar City; the Cedar City Elks vs the Ely Valley Mines of Pioche, Nevada, Ne-vada, at 8 p. m., and Lunt Motor company of Cedar City vs Pickett lumber company of St. George at 9 p. m. Friday night Enterprise will meet the winner of the Rocky Mountain Bradshaw game tonight, to-night, Iron Mountain will meet the Elks-Ely Valley Mines winner, win-ner, and the Iron County Record will tangle with the winner of the Lunt-Pickett Lumber game |
