Show Englestead To Head School Board In 1988 Approved minutes from last month's school board meeting show that Ray Englestead was elected president-elect of the board of education by a unanimous vote. Supt. Jerold Judd explained to the board that the Early Retirement Committee had met in Tropic prior to the board meeting and had agreed on the proposed plan. Clerk Laurel Holman explained each of the conditions of the plan. On motion, the vote was four to one in favor of the plan. The board decided to interview five construction management candidates upon submission of resumes and prior project information in-formation being furnished prior to the interviews. Vocational Director Alden Black reported to the board on the new vocational curriculum and presented up-to-date information on the present vocational programs. He also outlined current high school graduation requirements and how they fit in with vocational courses offered by the district. He presented the current vocational enrollment and the kinds of classes currently offered. He also described various grants being sought to help with the vocational programs in Escalante. The 1987-88 school calendar was discussed, and input sought for a final decision. Judd reported to the board on the principal teacher exchange with Phoenix schools and said it appeared ap-peared to be working well with promising results. Supt. Judd explained to the board that a lawsuit had recently been filed to prohibit school districts from renting school buses to private or church groups. The superintendent read a letter from the State Office of Risk Management regarding insurance coverage for outside programs using school buildings. Outside groups need to obtain their own insurance, he said. He presented a plan to remodel the school district board room. He also presented a fuel cost survey from Southern Utah State College which included coal, oil, propane, natural gas and electricity. Board member Phil Allen reported it had been discovered that a piece of property in Antimony is still in the name of the school district. He said the property had been sold to Wayne DeLange several years ago and had changed hands several times. Presiding Chairman Sam Allen said he felt the district should honor the agreement. The board agreed to ask DeLange to have a title search conducted and a deed prepared to convey the land in question to him by the school district. Allen also requested the present school site be surveyed and any excess land be sold and the proceeds be used to improve the remaining property. |
