la in this world I 1 will take the liberty of addressing this letter through the columns of at the news to the young people of the county and to parents who contemplate sending their young follis folks away to school the second per semester nester of the brigham young university Js Is just beginning today and therefore now is a very opportune time to commence A few facts about the school in a general way in may ay be interesting to all the home of the avy B Y U Is at provo one of 0 the most beautiful cities of utah the school occupies tour four large buildings jn in one of the prettiest sections of the city the grounds are beautifully laid om off and with all thi th surroundings are very pleasant and convenient there are numerous departments of the school so teat that students may get almost any course desired the following are some that are offered A fourbears four years normal course a high school course coarse in english I 1 or science van various ous courses in arts arid and industries and two college courses besides these we ave have a preparatory school designed tor for young people who have not had the advantages 01 ol of early schooling and last but ut not least the best music school in line ahe west which q work in vocal and instrumental music the equipments of the school are algood and the instructors are capable and energetic T the e enrollment numbers in the neighborhood of 1200 students with a faculty to of sixty teachers and tour four tutors making an average of ae less ss than han twenty students to each teacher expenses aie are as low lere chere probably as anywhere in the state board and rooms ranging from to 4 06 00 per week some students rent rooms very reasonably and do their own work I 1 merely mention these facts acts that you may know that the advantages of the school in these lines are equal with those offerall by other institutions the points about the school that I 1 desire to emphasize are the social spirit and its power of character building whenever you meet a student of the B Y U and ask him how and chy he likes the school his answer will always be that his heart Is bound abound to the school by the genuine spirit of good will and fellowship ital each leela r that jhb to ta in at I 1 home among friends who are thorl thor hughly interested ed in his welfare all who are here are striving earnestly tor for the higher life 1 would not be understood to mean that chat all are not admitted because the school does not ask where you lave been or what you are but where are you going if you are acs arous of reaching a higher level of living a higher and better life you win find help here the strongest to be found anywhere those having the school in charge are always ready to assist those who are striving to improve I 1 would also have you understand that the shiftless are not tolerated the character of the will be maintained and it if students continue to break the rules and regulations of the school regardless of the help that is offered them to reform they will be asked to study elsewhere principle must live if students must go and we challenge the world to produce a similar body of young people with higher ideas and nobler aspirations the needs of the students in the way of amusement are guarded jealously entertainment of the highest furnished at small expense by ahe ahoo 1 in ae the f form orm of rusl musicales musi cales balls recitals and lectures from the foremost men of the platform in the country the standard is held high that the ideals of the young people may te be raised and turned in the df direction of the noblest aspirations of will not prolong this his letter but I 1 would say to the parents send your young people here and they will ha be looked after this school Is interested in the welfare of the youth ot of the land and they will leave here with grander ambitions and nobler ideas than they ever had before As proof of this statement I 1 would refer you to the products of the past if you will enquire into the record of the foremost men of the state in the advancement of truth and education you will find that the B Y U haa furnished a very large share of them further the testimony of thousands of parents and students can easily lie be secured totham effect to the young people I 1 will say come and let us make our way through together we will make the most and get the most out of life by developing the minds that god has given us by so doing we can be better citizens better neighbors and better men and women the wo id Is calling loudly for quality
