Show WX stays alive in consolation By G.BRETT HART Sports Editor OGDEN Woods Cross put an end to the Bountiful Braves' season Friday at Weber State's Dee Events Center, 66-61, keeping the Wildcats' hope for a consolation bracket championship alive. These teams, of course were no strangers to one-another after meeting twice during regular season play. This time would be different, however. This particular WildcatBrave battle would be fought on neutral territory - the fate of both teams seasons hung in the balance. Woods Cross 5 -point win over Bountiful was the third time Woods Cross had defeated the Braves this season. Though it took the first quarter to warm up, the south Davis matchup , became a heated shootout to the final buzzer. The Braves took an early 6-3 lead in the first quarter, but Wildcat Brian Tayler tied the game at 8 with 2:19 left in the period. Tayler returned re-turned with 30 seconds left in the quarter to give the "Cats their first lead of the game - a hold the talented tal-ented .Woods Cross team would refuse to relinquish for the duration. First period action ended with the Wildcats in front 11-10. In the second stanza. Woods Cross jumped to a quick 18-14 lead with three minutes gone only to watch the Braves storm back to tie just one minute later. Bountiful forward Tony Jones blocked a Wildcat pass into the hands of Brave guard Aaron Roderick who raced the length of the court only to dish the ball back to Jones who completed the break. Jones' basket tied the game at 20. The remainder of the half became a blistering shootout. In a matter of seconds, Woods Cross amassed another an-other 5-point lead, 29-24, but Brad Beck cut the lead to two with a three pointer. With only seconds left in the half, Woods Cross clutched a shaky 31-29 31-29 lead. Roderick had a chance to give the Braves the lead with a last-second last-second 3-point attempt, but the ball bounced off the back of the rim. The opening seconds of the third quarter proved to be the turning point that eventually led to the Wildcat win. In the opening seconds of play, two nimble steals by the WX defense combined with two 3-point bombs from Jamie Coombs and Ryan Creer gave the 'Cats a 43-34 lead with 4:50 remaining in the period. The Braves call a time out which slows the Wildcat pace and managed manag-ed to claw their way to within 6 by the end of the period, 51-45. Though Bountiful had a number of opportunities to cut the Wildcats' lead, they were unable to crack the 3-point barrier as fourth-period play progressed. Jon Peterson brought the Braves as close as they would come, 55-52. hitting two from the line with just over three minutes left.; Unfortunately Unfor-tunately for Bountiful however, Wildcat Ryan Creer retaliated drilling drill-ing a three-pointer extending Woods Cross lead to 6 points once again. Mike Gun spurred the 'Cats to victory with a game-leading 17 points including three, 3 -pointers. Wildcat Ryan Creer trailed with 12, while Brian Tayler chipped in 11 rounding out Woods Cross' top scorers. Wildcat Ryan Creer led his team with 15, while Mike Gurr and Jon Wickizer chipped in 12. BEN LOMOND 79, BOUNTIFUL BOUN-TIFUL 70 OGDEN Ben Lomond continued con-tinued its quest toward a state tourney title at the expense of the Bountiful Braves Thursday afternoon, after-noon, 79-70. The Braves, like Pine View on Wednesday, fell victim to the Scots overpowering fast break and balanced bal-anced scoring. Ben Lomond jumped to an early lead and never let the Braves back into the contest until late in the game. Bountiful outscored the Scots 29-17 in the final period, but it was a case of too little, too late. Four Ben Lomond players logged double-digit showings against the Braves led by Justin Wimmer and Nate Pohlman with 17, while Cam Quayle and Ryan Nebeker chipped in 13 each. Bountiful was led by Chris Godfrey God-frey with 14, Jon Peterson with 12 and Aaron Roderick with 10. WX 60, UINTAH 54 OGDEN On Wednesday, the Cats sailed past Uintah to begin the 1991 3A tournament on a winning foot, 60-54. Uintah, the third place entrant from Region 7, gave the 'Cats a scare throughout the first half, but a 24-point performance in the third overwhelmed their first-round opponents. op-ponents. Jon Wickizer led the 'Cats with 18 points followed by Mike Gurr with 15 and Matt King with 8. BOUNTIFUL 88, EMERY 61 OGDEN Regardless of being eliminated on Friday, the Braves have to pride themselves on their first-round performance. Entering as Region 6's fourth place finisher, Bountiful punished defending state champion Emery (sans Shaun Bradley), 88-61. The Braves looked, and were, unstoppable against the defending champs. Jumping to a 16-10 lead after the first. Bountiful never looked back. After the halftime break, the Braves increased a 6-point halftime lead to an insurmountable 59-45 romp at the end of the fourth. The Braves out scored their opponents 29-16 in the final period en route to the 27- point upset. Tony Jones logged a 24-point game high performance, while teammates Chris Godfrey and Jon Peterson logged 14 and 12 points, respectively. Eleven Bountiful hoopsters logged points against Emery.
