Show Dodging the fad diet Many people are tempted to go on diets to tike off a few of those extra pounds, but experts say fad diets-which often seem like the quickest, easiest ways to shedarc not the way to go. The American Dietetic Association Associa-tion says that low-carbohydrate diets, novelty diets, drugs that reduce appetite and interest in food and very low-calorie diets (which usually recommend 800 calories or less a day) don't often promote changes in long-term eating habits. As a result, weight is often regained and dieters can experience other, more harmful side effects. So what are the keys to weight-shedding weight-shedding success? According to the booklet "Weight IssuesEvaluating Diets,' it's a combination of 1) A diet that offers some variety; 2) Getting Get-ting regular exercise; 3) Changing your eating habits slowly and 4) Setting realistic weight-loss goals. |
