Show Daws County kids win Mathcounts At the regional Mathcounts competition held Saturday, Feb. 9, three teams from Davis District placed first, second and third. This year marks the seventh year the Utah Society of Professional Profes-sional Engineers has sponsored the Mathcounts competition. Mathcounts is a series of competitions com-petitions (both individual and learn) beginning within each school, then at the regional level, then state competitions, and, Finally, the top four students in the Utah State competitions will travel to Washington, D.C. (expenses (ex-penses paid) to represent Utah at the national level. Fostering students' desire to I pursue their math education is the key to preparing them to contribute con-tribute to an increasingly technological society. Math-counts Math-counts is a unique opportunity for junior high students to be recognized by their peers and their community for their achievement in mathematics. Bountiful Junior High School's team took first place. Dan Baker, Sarah Johnson, Jason Arbuckle, Bethanie Davis and Tiffany Allred helped take their team to first place. Central Davis Junior High School came in second. Team members were Devon Rohlfing, Chad Winkoop, Bonnie Buhler, Rachel Whatcott, David Baty, Brian Dickman, Kristi Lively and Shareen Heaston. Millcreek Junior High School took third. Student team members from Millcreek were David Wood, Nate Okerlund, Rebecca Isom, Robert Walker, Cheryl Jones, Merci Collins, Chris Carbone and Bill Matting- Mathcounts is a cooperative project of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the CNA Insurance Companies, the Cray Research Foundation, the General Motors Foundation, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, NASA and the United States Department of Education. |
