Show Darts sink Pirates in 1st round By TOM HARALDSEN SALT LAKE CITY It had been a relatively quiet game for Davis High's Travis Homer, but the last 1 :06 were anything but quiet for the senior guard. Homer sank two free throws to give Davis the lead, then scored a basket and two more free throws in the final minute to help Davis to a 59-56 victory over Cyprus in a first round state 4A basketball game Friday Fri-day afternoon. The win moves Davis into a second-round matchup with Cottonwood Cot-tonwood Tuesday at 8:10 p.m. in the Huntsman Center. Cyprus led almost all the way, holding off several Davis attempts to take command. The Darts were plagued by poor shooting most of the first half, as the Pirates stuck a hard-nosed defense on the usually hot-shooting Darts. But the Pirates failed to take advantage of Davis 25 percent first half shooting and led just 26-21 at the half. Cyprus took its biggest lead at 29-23 with 5:30 left in the third period, but the Darts slowly fought back into the game as Bret Barton scored, Ryan Halliday hit a three-pointer, three-pointer, and Matt Peterson came through with consecutive hoops to give the Darts a 34-32 lead with 1:17 to go. Peterson was injured right after that hoop and left the game, and Cyprus tied the score at 36-all with just three seconds left on a pair of free throws by Chris Matagi. Davis inbounded the ball to halfcourt, from where Barton tossed in a three-pointer at the buzzer to make it 39-36 entering the final period. The Darts seemed to be in control in the final period, although twice Cyprus cut the lead down to two points before Davis took a 51-46 lead with 3:58 left. Cyprus scored the next six points to lead 52-51 with 1:51 to go. That's when Homer went to work. He made both ends of a critical one-and-one with 1:06 to go, then came back down the court to net a field goal with 50 seconds left. Seconds later, Homer was fouled grabbing a rebound, and again he made both ends at the line to give the Darts a 57-52 lead. Cyprus' Cade Osborn, who seemingly seem-ingly shot the ball everytime he touched it, was fouled hard and made two freebies with 26 seconds left, and then, after Barton was the victim of a questionable traveling call, Everest Matagi scored with six seconds left to make it 57-56. Barton was fouled on the inbound in-bound s play, and he calmly iced the game with a pair of freebies with less than two seconds left. Davis was led by Barton with 20, Homer with 13 and Isaccson with seven. Cyprus received 17 points from Osborn and 12 from Everest Matagi. For the game, Davis finished fin-ished shooting 37 percent from the field, while Cyprus hit the same 37 percent. Oddly enough, both teams made 19 field goals and both shot an identical 16 of 25 from the line. The difference Davis had five three-point baskets, three from Barton Bar-ton and one each from Homer and Ryan Halliday. Cyprus had just two treys from Jason Vantassell. |
