Show Nelson wins vocal competition American Mothers Convention Saturday, Sat-urday, Feb. 23, at noon, at the Clarion Hotel, 999 S. Main, in Salt Lake City. American Mothers Inc. annually sponsors its cultural art contests to encourage the development de-velopment and appreciation for music, art and literature for the enrichment of families. Carol Nelson was named Utah's First Place Winner in the 1991 American Mothers Vocal Competition. Competi-tion. The contest took place Feb. 2 at the Tivoli Art Gallery in Salt Lake City. Nelson has performed many leading roles in local theater companies. com-panies. She is currently performing the role of Mabel in the Salt Lake Community Theater's production of "Pirates of Penzance," which plays each night at the Community College Col-lege Little Theater through Feb. 23. She will perform at the State where she will represent Utah in the national contest. The winner of that contest will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship and will be invited to sing at the National Convention in St Louis. Nelson was named first place winner in the 1990 Metropolitan Opera State Auditions. She soloed with the Utah Symphony and Chorus in the 1990 Messiah Sing-in Concert at Symphony Hall. She has been featured soloist with Bountiful Symphony and Chorus in Mozart's "Requiem," Handel's "Messiah" and Berlioz "Childhood of Christ." She will also solo in Robert Cun-dick's Cun-dick's "The Redeemer" in Los Angeles April 12 and 13. She attended the University of Utah on vocal scholarships and also studied in Salzburg, Austria with the Brig ham Young University Study Abroad program. She is currently cur-rently a student of JoAnn Ottley, and has 12 years of private vocal training. She sang three years in the University of Utah Opera Workshop. Nelson is married to Gregory H. Nelson and is the mother to five children: Patrice 11, Emily 10, Daniel 8, Nathan 5 and Carrie Sue 2. f " ft f ,: :A ......
