Show Smith's opens new 'mega' store in Bountiful By JUDY JENSEN Editor After "searching and searching for years," Smith's Food & Drug Centers, Inc. has finally opened a new "mega" store in Bountiful. The new store opened at 8 a.m. today in a completely refurbished store that was formerly Alpha Beta at 2399 S. Main. According to Michael Frei, Smith's senior vice president, the 65,000 square foot store offers shoppers a wide variety of services. Store manager Zane Day explained ex-plained the new store is the first in Utah to debut Smith's newest decor package which includes bright mauve and celedon hues. A welcome addition to the store is a full service post office. The contract position established by the Bountiful Post Office will offer all of the services offered at the main post office, with the exceptions of post office boxes and bulk mail. Service will be offered seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Other customer services at the new store include money orders, Smith Tix, check cashing, fish and game licenses, and "want cards" which customers use to request specific items not found in the store. The deli and cafe area, managed by Diane Fletcher, offers a soup and salad bar, hot foods and over 300 varieties of hot and cold deli items. The full service bakery is open every day from 6 a.m. to 1 1 p.m., and is managed by Melinda Spencer. Over 200 freshly baked varieties of bakery goods are prepared each day. Gourmet produce, a freshly squeezed fruit juice bar, imported cheeses, fancy foods, bulk and generic gen-eric foods are all available at the store. Shirley Payne is the manager of the floral shop. Val Bertoch is the store's non-foods non-foods manager. The video store offers 5,000 titles, and is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The expanded cosmetics department managed by Terri Adams is stocked with a complete com-plete selection of cosmetics and fragrances. The prescription medications were moved to the new store from the old Smith's at 2135 S. Orchard Drive last night That store permanently per-manently closed its doors at 10 p.m. Tuesday. All pharmacy records are now at the new store. Pharmacy customers will be served by the same familiar faces, including pharmacist LaMar Hansen, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. In an effort to live up to its goal to "end long lines," Smith's has 16 checkout stands at the new store compared to 10 at the old. The store will be open 24 hours a day with the exception of one-half day on Thanksgiving and all day Christmas. The new Bountiful location became available to Smith's when Alpha Beta stores decided to leave Utah. "We wanted to pick up just the Bountiful and Sandy locations, but they wouldn't let us cherry pick. We had to buy all of them but one," said Frei. t 4 w He explained the Bountiful store is one of six purchased by Smith's from Alpha Beta. Frei said they plan to add new services to the new store as soon as possible, including banking services. Day said he is happy to be back j in Davis County. The Kaysville native lives with his wife Kayleen, and four children in Kaysville. He has worked for Smith's for 17 years, and most of that time he has managed stores out of the county. "It feels good to be home," he said. Day added that as the opening got closer he was, "a little nervous, but excited. I just want to make sure we serve the people in this area well.
