Show Sheriff destroys $200,000 in illegal confiscated drugs What is it like to destroy over $200,000 worth of confiscated narcotics? nar-cotics? Great! On March 29, the Davis County Sheriffs Department did just that. With permission from Sheriff Harry V. Jones, deputies Bob Hunt, Mike Olson and John Kagie combined com-bined efforts with the Davis County Solid Waste Management and Energy Recovery to effect a swift demise of a very unwanted accu- CONT. With the forthcoming move to the new justice complex, it was time to push to destroy all or as much of the evidence stored in the sheriff's office crime lab as could legally be eliminated. The evidence assemblage was generated by all law enforcement agencies in Davis County. The Davis County Metro Narcotics Nar-cotics Strike Force accounted for over 70 percent of the drugs in evidence. The flames of the bum put to rest a vast amount of marijuana, cocaine, co-caine, LSD, PCP, amphetamines and an array of drug paraphernalia that would stagger the imagination. In addition to the narcotics disposal, evidence from other crimes was also destroyed. All of the items destroyed had been cleared for disposal by the Davis County Attorney's Office as fully adjudicated and cases closed. When this project was started, members of the Davis County Sheriffs Department thought there might be a problem with locating a suitable facility to accommodate such a disposal. However, after meeting with LeGrand Bitter of the Davis County Bum Plant, all doubts were put to rest. Bitter and his staff provided full cooperation and went out of their way to see that the operation was a success. In all, the disposal went smoothly and $200,000 of a society scourge went up in smoke. |
