During the past four years, while taking pictures in the same area-part area-part of Utah's Paunsaugunt limited entry hunting unit Carpenter reports finding no fewer than 25 mule deer carcasses with heads and antlers removed. Carpenter and Demron have donated do-nated their $1,000 reward to the Paunsaugunt Water Fund, a special account set up by the RMMDF to place additional watering systems in the Paunsaugunt unit. The waterers allow deer to spread into new areas where there is better feed and lower poaching risk. Each waterer costs $2,200. Individuals wishing to donate to the Paunsaugunt Water Fund or wanting information on joining the RMMDF should write to the Rocky j Mountain Mule Deer Federation, P.O. Box 531, Springville, Utah 84663. The Rocky Mountain Mule Deer Federation awarded Sam Carpenter of Kanab and Gary Demron of Page, Ariz, a $1,000 reward for providing information and assistance in the arrest of two men accused of trophy buck poaching on mule deer winter range east of Kanab. The RMMDF offers a $1,000 reward to anyone providing information infor-mation leading to the arrest of individuals in-dividuals poaching mule deer bucks with antler spreads exceeding 25 inches. In December 1988, Carpenter and Demron were filming big bucks in the area when they heard a rifle shot. A short time later they found a parked truck. They took pictures of the vehicle and the license plate number before going to town and calling the poaching hot line. Two days later Carpenter and Demron joined wildlife official, Clifford Helms, in a seven-mile chase along back roads, finally apprehending ap-prehending two suspects who were driving the same truck Carpenter and Demron had seen earlier. Upon searching the back of the pickup, Helms found a freshly killed buck with an antler spread of 39 inches, eight points on one side and ten on the other. The antlers will be on display at the Rocky Mountain Mule Deer Expo in Salt Lake City, July 13-15. According to Carpenter, the suspects, Burdette Wynn of Man-cos, Man-cos, Colo., and Larry Smith of West Harrison, Ind., have kept the case tied up in court for almost 16 months, their lawyer arguing the ar- 1 V f i. , : .
