Show Active in LPS branch Two life-long friends serving in Vietnam cross paths there fHk j. Glen Newbury What happens when two home town soldiers stationed in war torn Vietnam come together to-gether unexpectedly? They are the two most happy soldiers in the country! For Sp.-4 W. Glen Newbeury, son of Mrs. Twila Newbury, and LaVar Frandsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Frandsen, who have been life-long friends and school mates, such a meeting meet-ing happened recently as the two spend their year's assignments assign-ments in Vietnam. LaVar is in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade. He took his basic training at Fort Ord, California, Cal-ifornia, prior to being sent to Vietnam. Glen is a clerk in HHT-lst Squadron, 11th ACR. LaVar is at Long Binh, Glen is near Bien Hoa where the two have met in LDS Church gatherings. gath-erings. He has also served some time in Germany where he has been on two different assignments. assign-ments. He writes: "I am enjoying enjoy-ing the service here (Vietnam) more than any place that I have been stationed so far. I am a clerk. I type all names coming and going out of this area besides a great deal of other business letters, etc. The men I work with have a good sense of humor and I get along well with them." "... another very special day was when LaVar (Frandsen) (Frand-sen) and I met. That evening LaVar and I talked until daylight. day-light. That was LaVar's and my first visit. A Southern Vietnam Vi-etnam District LDS Conference was held August 9 and again LaVar and I met and I stayed with him the second time. Can you imagine the joy, we had? It was great and so was the conference!" Glen was recently interviewed interview-ed by Chaplain Robert L. Christiansen and then set apart to be a branch group leader of Blackhorse. He was assigned to organize this and at the conference he gave a progress report on his assignment. He reported that he had gone through a thousand names to find 26 LDS members. He is LaVar Frandsen working hard "trying to make Blackhorse Branch a good one. Tell the folks back home hello and that I miss them and I'll see them next June I hope!" The Frandsens have another son, Grant, who is also in the service having just recently entered. |
