Pianist Leland and clarinetist West will perform solo and combined pieces in a program scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. in the Frank E. Thorley Recital Hall. "The performance is free to the public," Dr. Virginia Stitt, SUSC Instructor of Music, said. "Included will be three Romantic era pieces for clarinet and piano, avant-garde works for clarinet by William O. Smith, and Persichetti's Fifth Piano Sonata." The combined pieces, Stitt said, will include Robert Schumann's "Three Romances," pieces originally written for oboe; Leo Weiner's "Hungarian Dance," music of rustic origin common to wandering gypsy bands of the 19th century; and Johannes Brahms' Sonata in E-Flat, often considered among the most lyrical and most passionate works for clarinet. West's solo piece, Stitt said, will employ unconventional un-conventional performance techniques such as playing complete chords simultaneously and notes which are far beyond the traditional range of the clarinet. Persichetti's three-movement three-movement American work, which Leland will play at the SUSC recital, has become a staple of the pianist's twentieth-century repertoire, reper-toire, she said. The musicians have performed together many times in concerts throughout the West and Midwest. West is the principal clarinetist in the El Paso Symphony Orchestra; Leland has also performed widely.-! throughout the Southwestern ' states and his recitals have received the praise of critics in Europe and in America, Stitt said. 1 West holds two degrees from the University of Northern Colorado and two graduate degrees from the University of Iowa. To his credit are two professional recordings of avant-garde works for clarinet, a published composition, and many a articles. His recitals have been heard throughout . the United States through the Public Broadcasting Service. Pianist Leland holds the DMA degree from the University of Cincinnati, the BMus from Philadelphia Conservatory, and the Artist Diploma from the Nieder-saechische Nieder-saechische Hochscule in Hamburg, Germany. |
