This decision was confirmed on Tuesday by Kenneth L. Prothero, General Superintendent of Western Ore Operations. The open pit mine supplies iron ore to steel making operations at Geneva Works near Provo. Most of the approximately ap-proximately 70 employees at the Desert Mound Mine will be affected by the action Mr. Prothero said. A few employees will be required to serve as watchmen at the facility. Mr. Prothero said that the shut down of mining operations was necessary to balance ore supplies with iron production at the integrated steel plant. Most of the iron ore for steelmaking at Geneva comes from the Atlantic City Mine near Lander, Wyoming. |
