Show Upward Bound student travels to Washington, D.C. t . lb Upward Bound is federally-sponsored through the U.S. Office of Education and is administered at SUSC through the Division of Continuing Education and Public Service. The goal of Upward Bound, White said, is t to increase the academic performance and the motivational levels of eligible students so that they may complete secondary school and successfully pursue post-secondary educational ' programs. Twelve high schools . participate in the Upward Bound program at SUSC, including Panguitch, Beaver, Milford, Kanab, Bryce Valley, Cedar City, South Sevier, Richfield and North SEvier in Utah, and Page, Tuba City and Monument Valley in Arizona. Irvin Madson, president of the Southern Utah State College-based Upward Bound Program, has been selected to attend a Presidential Classroom for Young Americans, February 16-23, in Washington, D.C. Madson is a junior at Panguitch High School and is one of 70 students enrolled in the Upward Bound Program at SUSC. He is the son of Danny and Mae Madson, Panguitch. A Presidential Classroom for Young Americans has been developed to help select high school students explore the dynamics of the federal government through personal contact with its institutions and leaders. The one-week curriculum includes 15 formal sessions focusing on the three branches of the federal government, a as well as the media, the diplomatic community, a and the private sector. Several of the seminars are on-site briefings including visits to Capitol Hill, the State Department, and the Central Intelligence Agency. Six of the week-long sessions . are held during i the winter; another two j sessions are held during the I summer. Since its founding I in 1968, over 18,000 young Americans have participated par-ticipated in the program. "Students are selected to ' attend A Presidential Classroom on the basis of academic performance, evidence of a genuine desire to learn, personal qualities, and skill in relating the experience to others when they , return Jo their respective schools," said Carolyne White, SUSC Upward Bound Director. Madson is a Navajo student who has participated in Upward Bound since 1977. During the 1979 summer program at SUSC, he was elected president of the Upward Bound Student Government.
