Show Elks Donate SUSC Scholarships Three full-tuition scholarships scholar-ships have been donated to Southern Utah State College by the "Benevolent Protective Protec-tive Order of Elks, Loage 1556, as part of the organization's Americanism Program. "It is a pleasure to award these $420 scholarships to SUSC," Exalted Ruler James E. Hale, said.' "Scholarships are given SUSC each year in recognition of the important role the college plays in southern Utah and for the support given the various Elks programs." Lodge 1556 is based in Cedar City and includes members in Iron, Beaver, Kane and Garfield counties. SUSC President Orville D. Carnahan accepted the $1,260 check in behalf of the college. "We are continually grateful for the Elks' support," sup-port," Carnahan said. "It is a strong asset for SUSC to be backed by organizations such as this which contribute so regularly to the college." "A major aspect of the Elks organization is in helping the youth of the country," Hale said. "The Americanism Program has been established by the fraternal organization to encourage students to further their educations. Last year ; over $30,000 was donated to students in Utah through this program." In addition to the SUSC scholarships, Lodge 1556 gives' several awards to graduating high school seniors each spring. "The Lodge also sponsors Little League baseball and Jr. League football teams, scout troups and an annual Hoop-Shoot contest, as well as providing Christmas treats to children in elementary and nursery schools, gift baskets to needy families and boxes of candy to widows during the holiday season," Hale said. |
